Baby Driver Review
Review by Terry
Summary: Baby Driver tells the story of Baby, a young, gifted get away driver. I won't spoil anything, but I will mention some stuff that you’ve seen in the trailers. Baby owes a debt to his boss, Kevin Spacey. Each job that he completes, he is one step closer to being a free man. Baby meets a hot waitress who becomes his glimpse into a life that he could have. After he completes his last job, wouldn't you know it, Kevin Spacey calls him back for one more gig. The job goes south, and shit gets real.
(Edgar Wright is one of the best directors working today. Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World’s End are some of my favorite comedies. His movies are also super stylish. So, of course I have been pumped to see Baby Driver. It’s one of my most anticipated movies of the year…. AND for good reason, because Baby Driver is amazing.)
The Good: The characters in the movie are so fleshed out. Baby, played by Ansel Elgort, is the star of the show and he delivers. His quirky, humble, weirdness makes for interesting tell and the fact that he can drive like Travis can on Grand Theft Auto is even better. The supporting characters are just as good. John Hamm’s Buddy works so well. Plus, his name allowed for an my favorite line in the movie, but I can’t spoil that. You’ll know it when you hear it. The guy who really went into character was Jamie Fox. Bats, his on screen name, was an ass hole. I was legitimately pissed every time that he was on screen, which was not awesome because I love Jamie Fox. You can see that the actors had a blast while filming.
Other pieces that are certainly worth noting, would be the cinematography and of course, the sound track. Both of these aspects are characters in their own regards here, and the film would be a B movie without them. So, good work Bill Pope (cinematographer) and Steven Price. (composer)
The Bad: I can’t really think of anything bad, which is awesome! If I had a gun to my head and was told to pick something that I didn’t like, it may be that the movie felt 10 minutes too long? BUT that’s a nitpick, not really a con and it certainly doesn’t hurt the movie.
The Awesome: The Action was the coolest part of this movie. As you have seen in the trailers, Baby is a getaway driver so you know that there has to be some awesome car chases, and guess what, there is. Edgar Wright’s directing is perfection here. The scenes aren’t shaky. They look like they were filmed in one take, which is super impressive.
HighSpeed Recap: In the end, Baby driver has great characters with a great cast to portray them, great directing, superb cinematography, and an amazing sound track. This will be one of the most memorable movies you will see and easily one of the best films of the year. I’m giving Baby Driver 10 “Fuck You, Buddy”(s) out of 10.
